I can fully say that everyone reading this has seen a mockup, you only may not know what it is called. It is a very popular term in graphics design that everyone should know of.

So what exactly is a mockup? Mockups are static images designed to show you a preview of what a final design will look like. Mockups come in different forms, and are used for different purposes but basically what it does is to show a preview of what the final design will look like.

It is important to note that mockups aren’t used for logos alone, contrary to many people’s belief. A mockup could be used for literally any type of design, as what it does is to show you what the final outcome will be. Apart from logo mockups or brand identity mockups, we have social media flyers mockups, book mockups, billboard mockups, clothing accessories mockups and many others. We have Social Media Mockups, Device Mockups, Branding Mockups, Product Mockups and Print Mockups

They are also used to show how a website or how the ui (user interface) of an application will look when it’s completed. While mockups are used to show how the interface of a website or an application will look when designed, it is different from a prototype. Mockups come before prototypes, A website or app prototype is a simulation of what a live page will be. While a mockup is a static image, a prototype shows you the functionality of a website or application, a prototype allows you to go access the webpage as if it has been published already, you can go through the website, click and open and go through the website.

However, inspite how important mockups are in graphics design, it is important to note that a large number of people today use it wrongly, some individuals, businesses and even “graphic designs” use it wrongly. In designing logos, a mockup is not a logo, a mockup is not even the first stage of any design process, it comes in the last stage, after the design has already been made. There is this common type of mockup that is everywhere, people often regard it as a 3d logo. This is not a 3d logo, it is only meant to show your logo, not to be the main logo. In fact it is unprofessional to use this, because it has been abused and has been overused.

These mockups are serving the purpose of making the designs look 3D, but they aren’t communicating much else to their prospective clients.

Every design, flyers, banners or video ads should communicate an intended message to prospective customers, this is also applicable to mockups, hence before you use a mockup you must ensure it passes the message you want it to. For instance, if you have a restaurant or a food brand, ensure your mockup depicts what you do, ensure it is one that tells your prospective consumers what you do. It makes no sense if you sell moi moi and you make use of a mockup that has to do with pizzas, or when you make use of a that does not relate to what you do.
